Dress Shirt Fitting Tips

Collar Fit

The collar should fit snugly around your neck with enough room to slide two fingers between your neck and the collar. A collar that is too tight will pinch and create unsightly bunching, while one that is too loose will look sloppy and fail to hold your tie in place. When buttoned, the collar points should lie flat against the shirt without curling up.

Sleeve Length

Dress shirt sleeves should extend about half an inch past your suit jacket sleeve, showing a small band of cuff. Measure your sleeve length from the center back of your neck, across your shoulder, and down to your wrist bone. If you are between sizes, go with the longer option since a tailor can always shorten sleeves.

Body Fit

A properly fitting dress shirt should have enough room in the chest and torso to move comfortably without excess fabric billowing when tucked in. Slim-fit shirts taper at the waist, while classic-fit shirts offer a fuller cut. If you plan to wear a suit jacket over the shirt, make sure the shirt does not pull at the buttons when your jacket is buttoned.
