How to Measure for Pants

Waist Measurement

Measure your natural waist at the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button. Keep the tape measure snug but not tight. You should be able to fit one finger between the tape and your skin. Dress pants are designed to sit at or just below this point, so measure where you actually want the pants to sit for the most accurate size.

Inseam Measurement

The inseam is the distance from the crotch seam to the bottom of the pant leg. The easiest way to measure is to use a pair of pants that fit you well. Lay them flat and measure from the crotch seam to the hem along the inside leg. Alternatively, stand straight and have someone measure from your crotch to where you want the pants to break at your shoe. For a detailed guide, see our how to measure inseam page.

Hip Measurement

Measure around the fullest part of your hips, typically about 7 to 8 inches below your natural waist. This measurement is important for ensuring comfortable fit through the seat and thigh area of your pants. If your hip measurement is proportionally larger than your waist, you may need to size up and have the waist taken in by a tailor.
