Tuxedo Size Chart
A tuxedo is the gold standard of formal menswear. Getting the right size is critical because formal events demand a polished, well-fitted look. Tuxedos follow the same basic sizing as suits, but the fit requirements are more precise. Use the chart below to find your tuxedo size based on chest, waist, and jacket length measurements.

Tuxedo Fitting Tips
Jacket Fit
The tuxedo jacket should fit smoothly through the shoulders with the seam sitting right at the edge of your shoulder bone. When buttoned, there should be no pulling or X-shaped creases across the front. The jacket should hug your torso without restricting movement. The bottom of the jacket should cover your seat, and the sleeves should show about half an inch of shirt cuff.
Trouser Fit
Tuxedo trousers feature a satin stripe down the outside seam that matches the lapel facing. They should sit at your natural waist and have a clean, straight drape. The hem should have a slight break at the front of your shoe with no break at the back. Tuxedo trousers are never cuffed. If you are unsure about your inseam, check our inseam measurement guide.
Shirt and Accessories
A tuxedo shirt should have a bib front (pleated or piqué) and French cuffs for cufflinks. The collar can be a wing collar or a turndown collar depending on your preference. Pair with a black self-tie bow tie for the most classic look. A cummerbund or vest covers the waistband, and a white pocket square adds the finishing touch.
Rental vs Purchase
If you attend formal events regularly, investing in your own tuxedo ensures a superior fit and higher quality fabric. A well-made tuxedo in a classic style will last for years. If you only need a tuxedo occasionally, renting is a practical option, but be sure to schedule a fitting appointment well in advance. Rental tuxedos have limited alteration options, so knowing your exact measurements from our chart above will help you get the best fit possible.
Tuxedo vs Suit
Not sure whether you need a tuxedo or a suit? The key differences are in the lapel facing (satin vs fabric), the trouser stripe, and the overall formality level. For a detailed comparison, read our tuxedo vs suit guide.
