Tie Length Guide

The right tie length depends primarily on your height. A properly sized tie should reach just to the top of your belt buckle when tied. Too short looks awkward, and too long looks sloppy. Use the chart below to find the ideal tie length and width for your height.

Tie Width and Lapel Width

One of the most overlooked rules of dressing well is matching your tie width to your suit lapels. The widest point of your tie should be approximately the same width as the widest point of your lapels. This creates visual harmony and a balanced look.

Narrow Ties (2 - 2.75 inches)

Best paired with slim-fit suits that have narrow lapels. Narrow ties give a modern, fashion-forward appearance. They work well for slimmer builds but can look out of proportion on broader frames.

Standard Ties (3 - 3.5 inches)

The most versatile width that works with regular-fit suits and notch lapels. This is the safest choice for business settings, interviews, and events where you want a classic, timeless look. Most off-the-rack suits are designed to pair with this width.

Wide Ties (3.5 - 4 inches)

Pair these with wider lapels and peak-lapel suits. Wide ties are more traditional and work particularly well with double-breasted jackets. They provide good coverage for larger builds and add a bold, authoritative look.

Getting the Right Length

If you are tall and standard ties are too short, look for "extra-long" or "XL" ties that measure 61 to 63 inches. The knot you choose also affects the final length. A Full Windsor knot uses more fabric and will make the tie shorter, while a Four-in-Hand knot uses less fabric and preserves more length. Experiment with different knots to find the best combination for your height and tie.
